Warehouse systems – a way to optimize warehouse space

Shelving systems in a warehouse

Many goods are often stored in warehouses. There are periods when there are definitely more of them than usual. To cope with such a volume without organizing an additional warehouse, special systems can be used. What are their characteristics?

Storage systems, i.e. shelves

Various types of shelves are used in the warehouse, which allow for the use of space and arranging goods on pallets or in boxes at great heights. There are high-bay warehouses and classic ones in which the structure does not exceed several meters.

Warehouse racking systems can be divided into several variants, depending on the loading unit. The most popular of them are:

  • cantilevered – they are used to store longs,
  • shelves – boxes or loose items are most often stored on such shelves,
  • pallet racks – pallets are placed on this type of racks.

Individual models may also differ in maximum pressure resistance. In the case of heavier goods, it is necessary to use a structure with greater resistance. The shelves must - in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations - ensure full safety for both stored goods and employees.

Additional division of warehouse racking systems

Shelving systems warehouses may differ not only in the way of arranging the shelves and their purpose. There are push-back, in-line PHR, flow, drive-in, single and dense storage models available on the market. It is always crucial to match the warehouse system to the type of goods stored in a given building. This way you can make the most of the available space.

Gondola shelves for the warehouse

In smaller warehouses, you can afford to use special gondola racks. These are free-standing structures that consist of shelves on at least two sides. Sometimes there is also storage space on the sides. Such shelves are used not only in warehouses, but also, for example, shops and wholesalers. They are definitely lower than classic shelf or pallet structures.

Various storage systems in one facility

There is nothing stopping you from using even several different systems in one warehouse. In this way, you can make the most of the space even in a very complex facility. In some places, wall shelves will work well, and in others, free-standing ones can be used. Some companies produce goods placed on pallets as well as in boxes. Therefore, in one building you can use racks with shelves and pallet models.

Mobile shelving systems for the warehouse

Some warehouses, especially smaller ones, use mobile shelves. They allow you to change the setting depending on current needs or the amount of goods stored in the facility. However, mobile racks usually only work for slightly lighter loads. Such structures are equipped with special locks that ensure stability and safety.

Automatic warehouse systems

In larger warehouses, automation is used, which allows for reducing the necessary human resources and speeding up the work. Such solutions also ensure greater security in the company. Automatic warehouse systems rely on machines distributing and retrieving goods. Employees do not have to approach such structures, so they are not exposed to impacts caused by falling heavy objects. In such places there is no need to use forklifts or lifts.

High bay warehouse systems

In high warehouse halls, you can afford to create high storage systems. In such structures, the shelves exceed several meters. They allow maximum use of the space under the ceiling. Goods are placed using special lifts or automatic machines. The latter solution is very popular, but is more expensive. However, it allows you to maintain safety during work.

Warehouse management and its efficiency

The use of shelving systems in warehouses is of great importance, but we cannot forget about efficient management of such space. Loads should be appropriately marked. This allows them to be arranged in the right order, which speeds up ordering and placing subsequent goods on the shelves. It is worth considering the arrangement of individual boxes and pallets well in advance - preferably at the stage of ordering shelves for the warehouse.
